Sildenafil

What is Sildenafil?

Sildenafil is a medication used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence. We will discuss the main symptoms and causes of the condition in more detail shortly. It is a generic medication of the better-known Viagra, and sildenafil citrate is the name of the active ingredient in both. The active ingredient of a medication is the ingredient which biologically changes something either locally or systemically in the body.

Sildenafil citrate was first discovered in 1989 when the pharmaceutical company Pfizer were researching treatments for angina and it has revolutionised, and it was approved for the treatment of ED by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in 1998. The patent owned by Pfizer expired in 2017, and since then it has been available as a generic medication.

As pharmaceutical companies who produce generic medications do not have to invest the large sums of money associated with developing a new medication, the medication is usually much more affordable. These companies do however, have to adhere to the strict safety protocols when producing their medications, so if you buy Sildenafil or another generic Viagra, then you can be assured that you will be buying a product with the same efficacy and safety profile as the original.

In Europe, you no longer need a prescription for this medication so you can buy Sildenafil over the counter. Understandably, not everyone wants to announce their sexual problems in front of everyone in the chemist, or even go to their GP, and this is why online pharmacies have become so popular. If you are experiencing the symptoms of ED and would like to get treatment, you can buy Sildenafil online from our Europe pharmacy.

What is Sildenafil Used for?

As we mentioned before, Sildenafil tablets are used for the treatment of ED, also known as impotence. Impotence is one of the most common sexual dysfunction conditions that affect men all around the world. It usually affects men over the age of 40, however new studies have found that 1 in 4 of every new case affects a man under 40. The incidence increases by 10% with each decade of life. Although it is a common effect of aging, it is not an inevitable one, and there are measures you can take to prevent the occurrence and to treat the symptoms.

ED is defined by the inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection in order to engage in satisfying sexual activity. These symptoms must also cause distress or interpersonal issues to be diagnosed as a disorder. Most men will find that they experience the symptoms of ED from time to time, and this is completely normal and nothing to worry about. It could simply be the results of stress, tiredness, or even having too much to drink. If you are experiencing ED regularly with no apparent cause, then you may want to consider treatment.

ED is usually a secondary disorder caused by a primary disorder, which could be physiological or psychological in nature. Some possible causes include the following:

  • Mental health problems - these could include anxiety and depression. If this is the case, then you may need psychological intervention as well as Sildenafil such as psychosexual counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
  • Hormone problems - this can include having low levels of testosterone or being on hormone replacement therapy.
  • Cardiovascular problems - including hypertension (high blood pressure) or high cholesterol.
  • Side effects to medications - some medications can cause sexual dysfunction, for example, it is a common side effect of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

The most common cause for ED is a primary cardiovascular condition. The arteries that transport blood around the body are lined with smooth muscle so that it can reach our extremities effectively. When a type of fat, called plaque, builds up along the lining of the arteries, it protrudes into the hollow part of the vessel, called the lumen, restricting blood blow. The general term for this is called atherosclerosis, or arteriosclerosis, and it means that the plaques have caused the arteries to become narrow, more brittle, and lose elasticity. When this happens, there is less room for blood to travel through the vessels, leading to cardiovascular problems. Atherosclerosis is an umbrella term it can be caused by a range of factors, including the following:

  • High cholesterol
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Smoking

This inadequate blood flow caused by atherosclerosis will also affect the flow into the penis, resulting in the symptoms of ED. It is important to treat atherosclerosis not only for the management of ED, but to reduce the risk of further cardiovascular problems. If left untreated, the plaques will eventually accumulate another type of fat called lipids, white blood cells called macrophages, calcium deposits, and connective tissue. This accumulation of materials is known as an atheroma and can have serious health consequences including stroke, a type of heart attack called myocardial infarction, thrombosis, or aneurysm. The active ingredient in Sildenafil relaxes the smooth muscle in the arteries allowing them to dilate and improve blood flow. We will explain how this works now.

How Does Sildenafil Work?

The Sildenafil mechanism of action is the same as that of Viagra, i.e., it is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) enzyme inhibitor. Enzymes are proteins which are responsible for breaking down other proteins or chemicals, and so by inhibiting a particular enzyme, this stops it from breaking down its target. In response to sexual stimulation or thoughts, nitric oxide is released from endothelial cells and nerve terminals. This in turn stimulates the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), and when this is secreted, it causes the arteries in the penis to relax allowing increased blood flow to the corpus cavernosum.

The corpus cavernosum is the sponge-like region in the penis where most of the blood is located during an erection. The PDE5 enzyme is responsible for breaking down the cGMP, so if it is inhibited the cGMP stays in the system for longer. This is useful for people with ED as they usually have compromised cardiovascular systems, and this allows for the increased blood flow to be sustained.

Sildenafil Dosage

As a disorder, ED can be seen as being on a spectrum, which means the frequency and severity of symptoms will vary from person to person. The exact Sildenafil dosage instructions will depend where on that spectrum you lie. That being said, a lot of men say that their symptoms fluctuate, so you can vary your dose as-and-when necessary. Sildenafil 100 mg is the typical strength used for men suffering with ED, however this can be increased or decreased if indicated.

For example, 50 mg may be indicated for the elderly, for those taking medications where a higher dose would be contraindicated, or for those with underlying health conditions. Sildenafil 200 mg is sometimes issued when lower doses have not proved effective enough. Whichever strength you are taking; you should take it around 30 to 60 minutes before you want it to start working.

You should also never take more than one dose per day. Tablets should be swallowed whole and never crushed or chewed, as this can cause too much to enter your system at once.

How Long Does Sildenafil Last?

Sildenafil tablets are absorbed rapidly after ingestion via the gastrointestinal (GI) tract into the blood stream. The Sildenafil onset of action takes around 20 minutes and it reaches peak plasma concentration after about 60 minutes on average. The rate of absorption and onset of action will vary slightly between individuals depending on factors such as your height and weight, metabolism, and whether you have taken the medication with food or on an empty stomach. The Sildenafil elimination half-life is around 4 hours on average, so you will be able to have sex as many times as you and your partner wish within this timeframe. If you want to read some anecdotal evidence of how the medication feels and how long it lasts, you can read Sildenafil reviews online or on our site.

Sildenafil Side Effects

Unfortunately, all medications have the potential to cause side effects, and before you buy Sildenafil it is important to be aware of any that may affect you. Most men do not experience any, and for those that do they are usually mild and resolve on their own. Some of the more common Sildenafil side effects include the following:

  • Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Facial flushing
  • Headache
  • Visual disturbances

The above list is not exhaustive, and you should always seek professional advice if you are worried about any potential side effects. There are very few serious side effects associated with the medication, however some men do experience something called priapism; however, this is very rare. Priapism is a painful and sustained erection which lasts for 4 hours or longer and requires immediate medical attention.

Is Sildenafil Safe?

Sildenafil has a good reputation for being a safe and effective medication. It has undergone years of rigorous clinical trials to ensure its safety and to make sure that the benefits outweigh the risks. Additionally, in Europe, medications cannot be bought over the counter if they are not extremely safe for members of the public to take without a prior consultation with their GP. There are some considerations that you should be aware of however, including any possible Sildenafil contraindications. You should seek further medical advice before taking this medication of any of the following apply to you:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients
  • You are taking nitrate-based medications
  • You are taking any other ED medication
  • You have angina or heart failure
  • You have severe kidney or liver problems

Again, this list is not exhaustive, and if you are worried about any interactions, then you should consult with your GP, sexual health centre, or speak to your pharmacist before you buy Sildenafil.

Sildenafil vs Viagra

Sildenafil or Viagra? We get asked this a lot! They are essentially the same medication in the sense that they have the same active ingredient, namely sildenafil citrate. This means that they have the same mechanism of action, and at the same dose they will work in the same way, and last for the same amount of time. The major difference is the cost. As Viagra is the original brand of the medication it is far more expensive. There are valid reasons for this, as we mentioned earlier Pfizer had to front the huge start-up costs associated with developing a new medication, including funding clinical trials, and applying for licences.

They are possibly the best trusted brand as they have been around so long and so they feel comfortable charging more. Generic medications simply manufacture existing medications, so they are exactly the same in terms of quality, safety, and efficacy. Many people prefer to buy Sildenafil as it is a much more affordable option.

Does Sildenafil Work?

The short answer is yes. The popularity of medication speaks for itself. It is a hugely prescribed medication and used all over the world for the treatment of ED. There have been many double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trials which prove its efficacy. In fixed dose trials administering Sildenafil 100 mg, 82% of patients reported an improvement in their erections compared to 25% on a placebo medication, and the discontinuation of treatment due to adverse events was low.
