Addyi

What Is Addyi?

Addyi is a medication which contains the active ingredient flibanserin, which targets the central nervous system. We will explain how it works in more detail a little later. It was initially developed as an anti-depressant by the German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, however it failed to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for this purpose. The rights to the medication were acquired by a small company called Sprout Pharmaceuticals who applied for it to be licenced for the treatment of female sexual interest/arousal disorder (FSIAD).

Payment Methods Accepted : Visa, MasterCard, Bank Transfer & Bitcoin (Cryptocurrency)
Manufacturer: Sprout Pharmaceuticals

After further clinical trials, the medication was approved in 2015 and is sold under the brand name Addyi. The licensing for this medication has been somewhat controversial, however there has been substantial campaigning, most notably from Even the Score, for a sexual dysfunction disorder treatment for women when there are so many available for men. This inequality is not only seen with treatments for disorders, but also with contraception, with women being burdened with most of the responsibility. This includes having invasive procedures such as intrauterine devices and taking pills which disrupt hormonal balance.

This breakthrough medication has been approved by the FDA; however, it has not yet been approved by Medications and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) for use in Europe. If you want to try this medication or you know that it works for you, you can buy this medication online in Europe from our pharmacy.

What Does Addyi Treat?

Known as the female Viagra, Addyi is used for the treatment of sexual dysfunction in women. Previously termed hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), FSIAD is a common sexual health disorder affecting many women worldwide. The disorder is more than simply a low sex drive, but rather it is characterised by the complete absence of sexual desire or thoughts as well as feeling no to little pleasure during sexual activity 75-100% of the time. To be diagnosed with FSIAD the symptoms must also cause significant distress or interpersonal problems. Women diagnosed with the condition typically experience other symptoms such as low emotional and physical satisfaction, which can severely impact on her quality of life.

FSIAD can either be life-long or acquired, as well as generalised or situational. Life-long and acquired FSIAD means the condition has always been there or developed later in life, respectively. If the disorder developed later in life, it could be due to a traumatic event, and talking therapies could be useful, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or counselling. Generalised FSIAD means the symptoms are always present whereas situational FSIAD means that the symptoms are associated with a particular person or situation.

Almost all women will feel like they have low sex drive at some point in their lives, be in down to stress, anxiety about a new partner, or even mental health conditions such as depression. There is also the biological difference between men and women in terms of hormones. While men have one predominant sexual hormone, namely testosterone, womens hormones fluctuate in a cyclical nature from month to month. Womens reproductive systems mean than oestrogen will increase until they ovulate, then progesterone will increase until menstruation, and this cycle occurs every 28 days on average.

When progesterone levels are higher, women are typically less interested in sex. This fluctuation in sex drive is not the same as FSIAD and is nothing to worry about. It is also worth mentioning that womens sex drive will decrease after the menopause, but it should not disappear completely. Addyi tablets are not suitable for post-menopausal women and are only licensed for pre-menopausal women diagnosed with FSIAD.

Womens sexual liberation and sex positivity is surrounding high sex drive and being able to sleep with multiple partners without being labelled with derogatory terms. Although this is a huge step forward, there is very little support for women who have low, or no, sexual desire, leading to feelings of shame and embarrassment. There are men and women who identify as asexual or demi sexual who embrace their lack of sexual desire and are comfortable with their sexuality, but again, they are an underrepresented group within the LGBTQIA community.

This is one of the reasons that FSIAD is a controversial diagnosis and why the condition must be accompanied by feelings of distress to be considered a disorder. Levels of sexual desire vary across the globe and no woman should feel ashamed of their own level of desire. If you are experiencing the symptoms of FSIAD and it is causing you distress, you can buy Addyi online from our Europe pharmacy at competitive prices.

How Does Addyi Work?

The Addyi mechanism of action is very different to most male sexual dysfunction medications which target the cardiovascular system by inhibiting a certain enzyme to relax smooth muscle and increase blood flow. Addyi tablets are target the central nervous system, more specifically the serotonergic, dopaminergic, and noradrenergic neuronal pathways in the brain. The medication is described as a noradrenaline-dopamine disinhibitor (NDDI) as it increases the levels of noradrenaline and dopamine neurotransmitters and decreases levels of serotonin neurotransmitters.

The Addyi active ingredient is both an agonist and antagonist for serotonin receptors, with the 5-HT1A receptor and 5-HT2A receptor increasing and decreasing the production or serotonin, respectively. Although the medication binds to each receptor in equal amounts, there are certain factors which cause it to have a higher affinity to the latter receptor resulting in the down regulation of serotonin. It has been hypothesised that the effects exerted on the dopamine D4 receptor modulate this affinity, however the exact mechanism of action remains unclear. Noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin are neurotransmitters which regulate reward processing activity, feelings of happiness, and motivation.

It is widely believed that an imbalance in these neurotransmitters is the primary physiological cause for depression. While and increase in serotonin production has proved to be beneficial in relieving the symptoms of depression, it commonly causes a reduction in sexual desire, whereas noradrenaline and dopamine have the opposite effect. Evidence of this can be seen in the side effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which is a class of anti-depressant medication, where many women report a loss of libido. The Addyi effectiveness as well as the adverse effects will vary between individuals, and we will explain this in more detail a little later.

How to Use Addyi

The exact dosage can vary, however Addyi 100mg is the typical strength. It may be given at lower doses if you have a condition which is contraindicated, or if you are generally more sensitive to medications. The Addyi dosage instructions differ to male sexual dysfunction medications which are taken as-and-when needed, usually 30 to 60 minutes before having sex. Addyi pills are to be taken daily due to the mechanism of action which targets the central nervous system as discussed earlier.

The neurotransmitters involved means that taking the medication intermittently or taking it daily and stopping abruptly can disrupt the balance leading to emotional dysregulation. Stopping the medication can also cause the symptoms of FSIAD to return. As Addyi has sedative properties, it should be taken at night. Take your dose before going to bed, roughly at the same time at night, if possible, with a full glass of water ensuring not to crush or chew the medication. If you forget to take your usual dose, just carry on taking it as usual from the following night.

As the medication takes a while to build up in your system and alter the neurotransmitter levels, the Addyi benefits can take up to 4 weeks to be felt. If you have not noticed any benefit after 8 weeks however, then you should discontinue treatment. Make sure to gradually taper off the medication if you are discontinuing treatment to reduce the risk on unpleasant side effects.

How Long Does Addyi Last?

Although taking Addyi tablets on a daily basis may seem like a downside compared to male sexual dysfunction medications, which can be taken as-and-when necessary, they only last for a few hours. This medication gradually builds up in your system and is maintained at a consistent level after a few weeks, so the benefits are exerted continuously. This is particularly beneficial if you do not like to plan when you have sex and allows women to be spontaneous, which can increase libido to a certain extent by itself. If you know that your sex drive is higher while taking medication and you do not need to take a pill and wait half an hour, this can be really good for passionate moments and give you confidence.

Addyi Side Effects

Before you buy Addyi it is important to be aware of any potential adverse effects that you may experience. A lot of women do experience side effects; however, they are usually mild to moderate and go away on their own after a short period of time. Here are some of the more common Addyi side effects that affect more than 1% of people:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Hypotension
  • Sedation

Serious side effects are uncommon, but some women do experience syncope (fainting) in rare cases. If you have low blood pressure or are prone to fainting, you should seek professional advice before taking Addyi. The above side effects are not exhaustive, and you should ensure to research any potential harmful effects if you are worried about taking this medication or if you are taking a medication which may interact with this one.

Is Addyi Safe?

There are other factors to consider before you buy Addyi, such as contraindications. Unfortunately, Addyi and alcohol do not mix well. If you drink alcohol while taking Addyi, this can cause your blood pressure to drop too low causing you to lose consciousness. In clinical trials, it has been shown that 17% of women who drank quite a small amount of alcohol experienced syncope. If you are going to drink while taking this medication, you should have a maximum of 2 glasses of wine (or equivalent) and wait for at least 2 hours before taking your dose at night. If you drink more than this, then it is important that you do not take your medication that night and wait until the next evening to continue treatment as usual.

Addyi Benefits

In addition to treating FSIAD, Addyi has shown to cause a significant amount of weight loss. during clinical trials. During clinical trials, researchers initially thought the medication would cause weight gain when comparing the effects of another medication which is licensed for weight loss. Lorcaserin is a weight loss medication, and it is a 5-HT2C receptor agonist. Addyi is a 5-HT2C antagonist, which means it has the opposite effect. This suggests that serotonin is not responsible for the weight loss. Although the mechanism of action is unclear, the weight loss effects are not a placebo. Women who took part in the Addyi trial were not obese, were not told to manage their diets or follow an exercise routine, and there was no correlation with nausea and weight loss.

Addyi vs Vyleesi

There are very few female sexual dysfunction medications available. In fact, there are only two. There is one Addyi alternative called Vyleesi, which is a medication that is taken as-and-when necessary, rather than every day. One benefit of Vyleesi is that and it does not interact with alcohol. There are downsides however, including the method of administration, which is by injection. It can also only be used for a maximum of 8 times per month and carries a risk of hyper pigmentation (darkening of the skin) which can become permanent.
